"Our eyes are the windows to our souls
Our hands capture our dreams and shape our futures"

Taking impressions and castings from life has been practiced for centuries. Drawing on her skills as a classically trained artisan and
using the finest materials available Vanessa Hoheb has taken this time honored tradition and elevated it to an art form.

Hands Across Time is Vanessa’s unique approach to creating precise reproductions and superbly crafted castings of people’s hands. Couples recently engaged or celebrating anniversaries and people whose hands are an important part of their persona (including musicians, surgeons, and artists) have entrusted Vanessa to reproduce their hands in castings of flawless craftsmanship.

The stunning bronze and sterling castings are an enduring statement to the legacy of the individuals and are as personal and unique as the people whose lives they reflect. They capture a moment in time and are destined to become not only a treasured art object, but a family heirloom to be admired and cherished for generations to come.

Vanessa Hoheb received her apprenticeship as a sculpture technician growing up in her father’s sculpture studio in New York. The early studio days were filled with excitement working for such renowned artists as Jasper Johns, Louise Nevelson, Willem DeKooning and Frederick Hart. She was the Assistant Director of the Reproduction Studio for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and taught mold-making and casting at Pratt Institute. Vanessa also headed the five-member team responsible for the restoration of the skin of the Statue of Liberty. In 1984 Vanessa made molds over the eyes, hair and nose of Lady Liberty, which the coppersmiths used to make replacement patches for the damaged surface of the sculpture.

For each unique casting the mold process is simple and is completed in about an hour incorporating materials specially formulated for use on the skin. The mold-making process can be done at the subjects’ home or place of business . The bronze and sterling castings are produced from the original molds using the traditional lost wax foundry process. Vanessa personally oversees each step of the casting process, from making the wax positive from the master mold to the final patina or color and mounting on a marble base. Each casting is hand-engraved with the subject’s name and date. The castings can be produced as unique objects or in an editioned series.
